i have to make a quick comment about Philip's analogy of "if you want to be a great painter you would never go to museums to see what other painters are doing, because if you went to see Picassos you would start painting like Picasso..." hmmm. if you are a painter and you want to do a body of significant work, you have to know the context of your time. you have to work with the issues and paradigms of your time in order to be significant. so, yes of course, you would absolutely have to go to the museum and you would absolutely have to be knowledgeable about the other work being done in your time. to say otherwise is sort of silly.
