Burning Life 2009
From Chantal Harvey ... (music Patrick Faith)
What is Burning Life? It is the virtual spin-off from Burning Man, the grand happening that takes place once a year in the American desert.
Lindenlabs provides 34 servers, read: sims, and people apply or claim a piece of land to express their art, or to build their vision on a party venue.
Philip Rosedale aka Philip Linden is said to have gotten his idea for a virtual world while participating in Burning Man.
I was visiting this years Burning Life in Second Life, and was invited to become a hot stilt bitch.... thus transforming into a beautiful avatar and outfit, wearing stilts and juggling fire.
There is no beginning, where to go, there is so much to see (read: film). Then, I ran into iono Allen, who does virtual tours (Art Department), and he took me to some wonderful installations on BL.

The words IMAGINE PEACE are inscribed on the Well in 24 different languages.
IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is composed of a tall shimmering tower of light that will appear every year and be visible from October 9th (Johns birthday) until December 8th (the anniversary of his passing).
In addition, the Tower will illuminate from Winter Solstice (December 21st 28th), on New Years Eve (December 31st) and the first week of spring (March 21st -28th). It is lit from 2 hours after sunset until midnight, and until dawn on New Years Day.
On 9th October, John Lennons birthday, Yoko Ono asks the people of Iceland to join her and many others across the rest of the world in praying for peace and stability.
At 8pm, as IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is illuminated on the island of Viðey, in Reykjavik, Iceland, she asks everyone to join together and let the power of light and prayer become a collective expression of the desire for peace and harmony on our planet.

Onlive Traveler: A history lesson
AVATARA is not a cartoon. It's a documentary about an Internet subculture who spend their lives immersed in an online 3-D voice-chat program called "Digitalspace Traveler." Through a series of 14 interviews, we uncover the history, art, identities, struggles and emotions of this unique internet community who, since as far back as 1996 have mostly devoted their lives to this software.
First developed in 1993, Digitalspace Traveler and programs like it once promised, and still could deliver, a blueprint for a completely networked and intimate global future. AVATARA carefully documents effects that long-term immersion in cyberspace has had on the sensibilities of a particular group of individuals; by analogy it reveals much about the personal origins of our own attractions to 'life on the screen' and its potential impact on human social culture at large.
All of AVATARA was recorded in-world (ie. within the virtual environment), so our experience of the personalities is mediated through 3-D images (called avatars) of rabbits, pharaohs, seahorses, giraffes, the grim reaper, flowers, guitars, trolls (etc) which the subjects choose to represent themselves in cyberspace. (AVATARA is the world's first entirely 'in-world' documentary.) These talking heads and twitchy torsos simultaneously express the sublime and the ridiculous, but AVATARA lets their humanity, and the stunning, absurd beauty of their digital universe, speak for itself.
"Like Mardi Gras, avatar worlds are best experienced in person rather than seen through a keyhole. Conventional media fail to frame the participatory masquerade that animates avatar communication. The AVATARA video is the best attempt yet to convey a virtual community through the savvy artistic eyes of film-makers. Fresh and surprising!"
Sound familiar?

Second Life News - Robot style!
We showed the first edition of this news programme on Week In Review yesterday and the backchat was in hysterics about the robot voice. Indeed, it does irritate no end after a few seconds.
This is today's edition. What might otherwise be a worthy contribution to our video news feeds, the programme has now acquired advertising - the presentation of which is equally suspect. We can't see it ousting MBC News from our number one slot just yet!

Tarsha - Second Life (Music Video)
Some new exposure for our favourite virtual platform wuth this new music video for breakout rock group, TARSHA!
Produced by Aleisha Russell / Esprit Films. Edited By Chris Lowe / Suite 7 Productions, some doubt that the heavy metal style and visual aesthetic here will actually appeal to SL residents, but the lyrics are clear enough. One wonders why they didn't come up with a video that actually made some use of the virtual space though.

Another Perfect World - 30 minutes Preview
You Tube removed the full feature but here is a new preview version.
Another Perfect World is a documentary about digital utopias, about online worlds created as places for work, play, friendship and love.
People have always created utopias, worlds that reflect the greatest, most enlightened and noble ideas of the period in which they live. The utopias of the future will be created online, in digital worlds capable of rendering photo-realistic depictions of whatever the mind can imagine with technologies that allow people from around the world to join in. We now have the chance to build a new world from scratch.
If you were going to do so, on which principles would you establish it? What is more important: freedom of expression; an active marketplace to encourage social interaction; or laws to define the limits of social relations?
